I have just taken on a new website and this has the Jetpack Plugin activated. Is this a useful plugin? I see quite a few blogs about it being unnecessary and even harmful as

you will need to go through your site to find out where it was being used and what effects turning it off will have.
if it is a ecommerce site then i think it is used in conjunction with woocommerce, in what relationship i don't know - the info is out there on google.
I have heard that it is a plugin that does slow your site down, but you have the opportunity to test it here with site speed.
you could always put up a test site and put it on there and see what happens - add all of the other plugins as well.
could you ask the previous owner why they installed it?
good luck tracing it Richard.
phil

Thanks for the excellent response. I will contact the previous owner to get some feedback on this and a few other plugins. I think there is about 25 I counted on the site.
All the best.
Richard

good luck
hope you get it sorted.
phil

I can see this one is going to take some time to understand what it is doing in various areas of the site - then work out a plan to get rid of it from the site. Anyway - making progress so far!
Thanks
Richard

Dump it, it does not work well with WA's version of Wordpress.
Robert

I am still in the process of finalising the Domain Registration transfer at GoDaddy. Once I have this, I will look at shifting the hosting to WA also. I have about 25 plugins to work through on this site.
Thanks
Richard

Choose the Plugins you need as opposed to the ones you want.
Robert

I haven't revisited the plugin in a while but in the past it was trying to do too much. Because of that I have had a few sites that stopped working because of JetPack. It was as simple as deleting the plugin via FTP to clear it but I lost confidence in the plugin.
I know of others here and elsewhere who had problems with their websites after installing JetPack. WA banned its use for websites hosted here due to the problems it caused.
Best Regards,
Jim

Hi Richard

Jetpack plugin is not recommended by WA as from what I have also read and heard not only can it slow down your website which is definitely not a good thing for your presence and ranking with search engines

The other part I wanted to add should you decide to disable the plugin make sure you have a proper backup done before you disable Jetpack, in fact, any plugin or doing an upgrade to your site.

That way should something unexpectantly go wrong you can restore the backup once more.

Hope that helps don't forget you also have site support to help you out if you run into problems as well

Wishing you well

Andre

Thanks Andre for the advice - very sound. I was trying to sort the back-up side this morning - so far not successfully - hopefully will get this sorted this evening.

I have counted about 25 plug-ins on the website, so I will have a bit of a job in untangling and simplifying the site as a first step. The back-up regime here will be critical no doubt.

It has been a while since I have been very active here - but have slowly been growing my site. This opportunity is amazing - the leader in my niche, over 20,000 hits per month so need to take this one carefully and work the best strategy to grow the membership and ultimately monetise.

Thanks heaps for the imput.

Richard

This is one training by Marion regarding backups I think she has some more so you can check out her training. but here is one for starters. And I agree with you your website seems a bit delicate so backing up should be the first and most important step.

Wishing you well let us all know how you went once done.
Andre

Thanks heaps. I will look at this from Marion.
Richard

You are welcome enjoy so to speak.
Andre

Looks like I have the back-ups sorted - so first step complete.

I have an amazing opportunity to be given the best performing website in my existing niche and wondering on advice on how to go about integrating my website into theirs? A cou

There's more to know.

Which site has more information on it?
How many visitors does the other site get?

You can move the information from the smaller site over to the bigger site or just start writing your new content on the bigger site and then have the URL redirect to the site that you decide on, assuming that these two sites are related.

I know that the registrar has the ability to handle this because I've owned three websites that all redirected to the same website and that was while I was using the registrar that you mentioned.

If both sites are fairly large, I think you're gonna have more work than an answer to your question here can answer.

It's a slow, SLOW process to do it by hand. I just moved 13 articles and their comments from one site to the new one and it took me all night.

You think there'd be a plugin for this, but I haven't heard of one.

Thanks for the response - appreciated.
My existing site is a lot smaller, so I am thinking of adding my existing pages individually. I will first have to make some changes to the navigation of the new site and also add some of the searchability I have on my site.

The facebook one is interesting, so will have to see how that goes. I guess some homework required on this.

Thanks

Richard

Richard,
To start - the problem lies in first get the site and transfer it
to WA - taking over the Facebook account is questionable
because they are linked to a personal account unless it is
a paid business account with Facebook!
When you try to combine two websites by moving your
content to the other website it will copy over top of the
content on there from what I could see when I transferred
my sites :(
So someone more experienced with this part might have a
better answer for you!
Good luck in what you decide to do and wishing you the best.
Susan

Thanks heaps for the response.
I think a step by step approach will be most useful and probably quite a bit of manual work.
The Facebook aspect will be interesting and will require some homework I guess.
Richard

Yeah, Marley. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with that, At the same time, your story confirmed my fears, so I'm glad I found out.

A month ago, I transferred my site over to the original site (after being fickle) and I moved every post, every page and every comment by hand. one by one.

It was a real pain! If my site had been just a few posts bigger, I think I would have resigned myself to sticking with what I thought I wanted my website name to be in the second place.

I've decided to use that old new site for reviews of any products that I might mention in any of my articles.

Hi. Just working for a not for profit who are considering a squarespace platform website - anyone know anything about this web design platform?

Any feedback appreciated.

I used the service for 3 years several years ago. I liked it back then and from all accounts they have improved. They have since added an export to WordPress function, and also 24/7 support.

I did not find it as intuitive or as easy to learn and use as WordPress. I loved their beautiful templates (though limited in variety and numbers). Back then their website builder was not compatible with all browsers, so that would be worth checking out.

It can get a bit expensive when building multiple websites, so that question should be addressed if it is more than one website.

I find the content management system in WordPress to be more flexible and intuitive, but for a small to medium non-profit website, SS could work very well. ~Jude

lots of people rave about it's functionality vs. wordpress in terms of design

Thanks - very interesting.

You learn something new every day ..I never heard of squarespace until now ..I think it’s a paid service

Thanks. Just have the graphics guy who has his internet guy wanting to use this tool. Of course, I am a wordpress guy - so just trying to get a head-up. Thanks. Richard
